- A deep-seated blaze destroyed Elkins Park Fire Chief Bill Obrecht Sr.'s home Saturday - and apparently killed his family's three cats - despite a four-hour battle waged by firefighters.
No people were in the house when the fire started, said Tim Schuck of the Cheltenham Township Fire Marshal's Office, and no one was injured.
Flames burned inside the walls and basement until smoke began spewing from the house and a neighbor called 911 about 2 p.m., Schuck said. Firefighters could not get inside because the first floor had partially collapsed, he said.
Schuck said investigators planned to get inside the house today to seek the cause of the blaze. The cats were not found, he said. Obrecht, who has been fighting fires for more than four decades, could not be reached for comment.
